Amazon Seller Accounts in the UK: What to Decide Before You Start

Choose a selling plan, prepare for registration and understand account health before deciding whether FBA suits your UK business.

An Amazon seller account lets you manage listings, orders and account information for sales on amazon.co.uk through Seller Central. Before registering, decide which selling plan suits your expected activity, which business structure you will use and how you intend to fulfil orders.

The Individual plan charges a fee for each item sold and may suit occasional sellers. The Professional plan charges a monthly subscription instead and provides features suited to sellers managing a larger or more active business. Neither plan determines whether you should use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA): fulfilment is a separate decision. This guide focuses on account decisions; for the wider launch process, see how to sell on Amazon in the UK.

Individual or Professional: which selling plan fits?

The main cost difference is how you pay for the plan: the Individual plan charges a fee for each item sold, while the Professional plan charges a monthly subscription instead. The Individual plan may suit you if you are testing a product or expect occasional sales and do not need advanced selling features. The Professional plan may suit you if you expect regular sales, manage a broader catalogue or need its additional capabilities.

Those Professional features include bulk listing and inventory tools, business reports, access to advertising, and the ability to apply to sell in categories that need approval. If your workflow depends on those capabilities, consider the Professional plan even before sales become regular. Approval to sell a particular product or in a particular category is a separate matter; choosing a plan does not itself grant approval.

An individual can run a business, and a limited company still needs to choose a selling plan. Check current plan details in Seller Central before deciding. For actual costs and other product-related charges, read our guide to Amazon selling fees in the UK, then model a proposed product with the fee calculator.

What to prepare for Seller Central registration

Seller Central registration typically asks for information that identifies you and, where relevant, your business. Have your identity details, business details, contact information and bank details ready. You may also be asked for supporting documents. The exact requests depend on your circumstances and the information Amazon needs to verify.

Use details that are accurate and consistent across your application and documents. For example, check that names and addresses match the records you intend to provide, and use contact details you can access. Identity verification matters because Amazon needs to establish who is operating the account. If a request is unclear, follow the instructions shown in Seller Central rather than guessing or submitting a document that does not answer it.

Treat registration as the beginning of ongoing account administration. Decide who will monitor account messages, keep business and bank information current, and retain records that support your product and business details. These habits make later queries easier to handle.

Sole trader or limited company?

A sole trader and a limited company are different ways to organise a UK business; neither is the same thing as the Individual or Professional Amazon selling plan. Your choice of business structure affects matters beyond Seller Central, including administration, record-keeping and how you deal with tax. It should reflect your wider circumstances, not just the account form you want to complete.

If you are unsure which structure to use, consult HMRC guidance or a qualified accountant before registering. Do the same for questions about tax or VAT, rather than assuming that selling through Amazon determines your obligations. Once you have decided, enter the corresponding business information accurately during registration and keep it consistent with your records.

What account health means in practice

Account health is the condition of your selling account as reflected in Amazon’s performance and policy-related information. Seller Central has an Account Health page where you can review it, including broad areas such as customer service performance, policy compliance and shipping performance. Protecting account health matters because problems with listings, orders or compliance can disrupt your ability to sell.

Build a routine around the aspects you can control: describe products accurately, check whether you have permission and the necessary information to sell them, fulfil orders as promised, and respond to customer and account messages. Review the Account Health page and account notifications regularly. If Amazon flags an issue, read the notice carefully and address the specific concern. Keep relevant records so you can explain your actions if asked. Do not rely on an old checklist for current requirements; check Seller Central for the requirements applicable to your products and account.

Decide how to fulfil orders before committing to FBA

A seller account does not require you to send stock to Amazon. You can assess whether fulfilling orders yourself or using FBA better suits each product and your operating capacity. With FBA, Amazon handles fulfilment of eligible stock after it is received into its network, but you remain responsible for choosing products, planning inventory and meeting applicable listing and stock-preparation requirements. The UK FBA guide explains the fulfilment model in more detail.

Before buying stock for FBA, work through these questions:

  • Is the product suitable? Check its listing and fulfilment requirements in Seller Central before committing to an order.
  • Can you prepare it correctly? Packaging and labelling affect whether stock is ready to send. Read the FBA packaging guide as you plan your process.
  • How will the costs affect your margin? Include sourcing, delivery, selling and fulfilment costs, as well as a realistic allowance for returns and stock that takes longer to sell. Use the profit calculator to test your assumptions.
  • Who will manage the stock? Decide how you will track incoming units, monitor sales and plan replenishment without tying up more cash than your business can support.

You can explore the other seller tools as you compare products and fulfilment options. Make the account, business structure and fulfilment decisions deliberately: each affects the work you will do after registration, not just the form you fill in to begin.
