What Can You Sell on Amazon FBA Without Approval in Ireland?

Many everyday product categories on amazon.ie are open to sellers without prior approval, including books, toys, sports equipment, home and kitchen goods, and most clothing. Restricted or gated categories — such as groceries, jewellery, and health products — require Amazon to grant permission before you can list. Starting in an ungated category is the simplest route for new Irish FBA sellers.

Open and Gated Categories on Amazon FBA

When you set up an FBA business on amazon.ie, not every product category works the same way. Amazon divides its catalogue into ungated categories (open to all sellers without prior approval) and gated categories (where you must apply and be approved before listing). Understanding this distinction before you commit to a product saves time and avoids listing rejections.

Categories You Can Sell in Without Approval

The following categories are generally ungated on amazon.ie, meaning a seller with an active Professional account can list products straight away:

  • Books — one of the most accessible categories, with no approval required
  • Toys and Games — open year-round, though Amazon occasionally introduces seasonal restrictions in the run-up to Christmas
  • Sports and Outdoors
  • Home and Kitchen
  • Garden and Outdoors
  • Office Products
  • Pet Supplies
  • DIY and Tools
  • Baby (excluding feeding and nursing products, which can require approval)
  • Clothing and Accessories — broadly open, though some branded or licensed items carry restrictions
  • Consumer Electronics — open category, though individual branded products may be gated

This list covers the bulk of physical goods that new Irish sellers typically consider. If your product sits within one of these categories and is not a restricted brand, you can usually create a listing and send stock to an Amazon EU fulfilment centre without any additional steps.

Categories That Require Approval (Gated)

Certain categories carry higher risk for Amazon — whether due to safety concerns, authenticity issues, or regulatory requirements — and require sellers to apply for permission. Common gated categories include:

  • Grocery and Gourmet Foods
  • Health and Personal Care
  • Beauty
  • Jewellery
  • Watches
  • Fine Art
  • Music (physical media, particularly new releases)
  • Video, DVD and Blu-ray
  • Automotive Parts and Accessories (some subcategories)

To apply for approval in a gated category, you typically need to provide invoices from a verifiable supplier, product images that meet Amazon's standards, and sometimes a test order receipt. Amazon reviews these on a case-by-case basis through Seller Central.

Brand and Product-Level Restrictions

Category gating is only one layer. Even within an ungated category, specific brands can be restricted — this is known as brand gating. Large consumer brands often gate their own listings to protect against counterfeit goods. If you plan to resell branded products, check the individual ASIN in Seller Central before purchasing stock. A restricted brand inside an otherwise open category will still block you from listing.

For private label sellers creating their own brand, this is less of a concern — your own branded product will not be gated by a third party.

What This Means for Irish Sellers Starting Out

For most Irish sellers working with a starting budget of €1,000–€3,000, beginning in an ungated category is the practical choice. It removes one variable from an already complex process: sourcing, shipping to EU fulfilment centres, VAT registration, and fee management are enough to manage without also navigating an approval process.

Home and kitchen, toys, and sports equipment are popular entry points because supplier access is straightforward, products are easy to ship from manufacturers in Europe or Asia, and margins are workable. Once you have a trading history and can demonstrate clean invoices, applying for gated categories becomes more straightforward.

A Note on Compliance Beyond Amazon's Rules

Amazon's approval requirements are separate from Irish and EU legal obligations. Certain products — particularly those in health, electrical goods, and children's toys — must meet EU safety standards and carry CE marking regardless of whether Amazon gates the category. Selling a non-compliant product in an open category does not make it legally permissible; it simply means Amazon did not block the listing at the point of creation.

If you are importing goods from outside the EU, factor in customs duty and Irish import VAT at 23% on the customs value, and ensure you hold an EORI number from Revenue before your first shipment.

Checking Your Specific Product

The most reliable way to confirm whether a product is gated is to attempt to add it in Seller Central. Navigate to Catalogue > Add Products, search the ASIN or category, and Seller Central will indicate whether approval is required. This takes less than a minute and gives you a definitive answer before you place a supplier order.

Once you have confirmed your category is accessible, running the numbers through an FBA profit calculator will help you assess whether the margins hold up after referral fees, fulfilment costs, and VAT obligations are accounted for.
